RT. HON. MIKE ETEBA PRESIDES OVER HEARING FOR THE FREEDOM OF NIGERIANS UNJUSTLY REPRIMANDED IN FOREIGN PRISONS*

As the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, I presided over a crucial investigative hearing on Tuesday, 30th April, 2024 during which a pressing petition by the Ohaneze Youth Council (OYC) against the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs was addressed.

The petition highlighted the harrowing experiences of over 5,000 Nigerian youths detained in Benin Republic prisons accused of various offenses and subjected to unprovoked harassment, maltreatment, and even death. As a committee, we were deeply troubled by these allegations, urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Government to act swiftly, as every day counts for these innocent Nigeriansu languishing in foreign prisons.

The respondent from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed us that they have written to the government of Benin Republic regarding this matter and are awaiting a response. While this is a positive step, we urged the Ministry to expedite the process and update our committee as soon as a response is received.

Meanwhile, I want to assure Nigerians that we will not relent in our pursuit of justice and human rights. We will continue to monitor this situation closely and ensure that the government of Benin Republic takes concrete actions to address these grave allegations. Our committee will not tolerate any form of mistreatment or injustice against our citizens, and we will work tirelessly to safeguard their rights and dignity.

The matter has been adjourned to 23rd May, 2024, pending the response from the government of Benin Republic. I call on all stakeholders to join us in this quest for justice and human rights, as we work together to protect the welfare and interests of Nigerian citizens everywhere.

Sincerely,

Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba

Member Representing Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency
