…CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION AGAINST JUNGLE JUSTICE; OBONG PLEDGES HEIGHTENED COLLABORATION WITH POLICE
1. The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, psc, mnips, mspsp, has paid a courtesy visit to His Eminence, the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, as part of efforts to strengthen the relationship between the Police Command and the traditional institution and deepen community-based policing in the State.
2. The visit, held at the Palace of the Obong of Calabar, today 15th September 2026 provided an opportunity for the Commissioner of Police to pay homage to the revered traditional institution and formally familiarize himself with His Eminence and the Council of Chiefs, while seeking their continued partnership and support in promoting peace, security and public safety across their respective domains.
3. CP Ajo emphasized the strategic role of traditional rulers in community security, noting their influence, proximity to the people and knowledge of local dynamics. He called for stronger collaboration in intelligence sharing, early identification of emerging security threats, peaceful resolution of community disputes and support for the Command’s intelligence-led policing strategy.
4. The Commissioner particularly called on His Eminence and the Council of Chiefs to use their respected platforms to speak firmly against jungle justice, mob action and other forms of violence. He stressed that allegations of criminal conduct should be reported to the Police and other lawful authorities, rather than being subjected to extrajudicial punishment, noting that collective action by traditional institutions and security agencies is essential to sustaining the rule of law.
5. In his response, His Eminence, the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, warmly welcomed the Commissioner and his delegation, commended the initiative to strengthen Police–traditional institution relations and pledged heightened collaboration with the Command in promoting peace, security and harmonious relations between the Police and the people.
6. The Commissioner of Police expressed appreciation to His Eminence and the Council of Chiefs for their warm reception and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to professional, responsive and community-oriented policing. He emphasized that effective security requires the collective efforts of the Police, traditional institutions, government, community leaders and other stakeholders, as security remains a shared responsibility.
